Many parents always want the best for their children, especially when it comes to education. These years in school will determine the future of their little ones. What job will they have? Will they go to college or university? Some might struggle what school would be the right one. There are different options for school systems, such as the so called “Waldorf School”, which is famous for treating each pupil as individuals and encourage their unique interests and talents. The question is: Are Waldorf schools superior to the traditional school system? The following is all about the pros and cons of Waldorf Schools. First of all, Waldorf Schools do not use the national curriculum. They have their own individual education plan that can be changed by the teacher. Because of this fact, the teacher can decide what topic they can deal with and make education more customized to the children’s interests. If students want to learn about specific animals in second grade they have the change to do this. However, this can be a negative aspect, too, since parents would not know what their little ones will learn in school. In addition to that, there are no textbooks in Waldorf Schools, which is caused by the changing curriculum. In Waldorf School each child creates a book itself based on the current topic. This leads us to the next point: creativity. Encouraging the creativity is one of the main aims for Waldorf pedagogy. The information is mediated by art, which can be drama, music, dance or crafts. Painting, acting, singing, dancing – all of these are said to promote the use of their own creativity and imagination. After all, because of these activities children do not learn the basic knowledge in the first year of school. Especially reading is not taught to children under the age of seven or eight. This can lead to severe disadvantages, because when you learn to read late it can trigger reading disabilities. Another aspect is, that children remain with their teacher and class from first grade until they graduate. This allows them to build a long-term relationship with their teacher but also with their classmates. Even the ones who aren’t that good don’t have to repeat a year. In this way, friends are not separated. However, what if you have any problems with your teacher or specific classmates? Well, then you are really unlucky, because you have to deal with them for years. Special about these kinds of school is, that there are no electronical devices. Whereas traditional schools are going to ban chalkboards and use whiteboards frequently, Waldorf Schools value the good old chalkboard and are not going to use modern technology for the classrooms. Computers, television or smartphones are strictly prohibited. In addition to that, they even encourage the children’s parents to ban these modern media at home, too. Despite the fact that in my opinion some kids should not have so much contact to these devices at a very young age, children who go to school should slowly get familiar with modern technology. In this aspect, Waldorf school does not prepare the child for our real world, which is ruled by smartphone and co. In comparison to normal schools there are no grades until the eighth grade, which seems to be unbelievable at first. Because of this, children are more relaxed and not under pressure to get the best grades in class to please their parent’s expectations. No pressure also means more fun at school, so they learn to love learning. Nonetheless, it is harder to attract the student’s attention and motivate them to actually learn the things they do at school. Pupils who do not learn will not have any consequences at first, because they do not have to repeat the year. This means that the teacher has to deal with the good pupils and the bad ones that are left off behind. Also good students might not know how good they actually are, because they have no feedback about their work. The maybe most important thing is the education degree the students can achieve. The special thing about Waldorf Schools is, that you can even reach the highest degree if you’re good enough. Considering all these facts, Waldorf School is not completely better than traditional schools. There are some things that are better in traditional schools, too.
