#The Be-Ne-Lux States The three European countries Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg belong to the so-called Benelux Union. They are located in central and western Europe, between Germany and France. The three states are among the smallest on the European continent. Each of these three Benelux countries is described below. ------------ ###Belgium **Capital**: The capital of Belgium is Brussels, which is considered an important centre of culture, art and architecture. Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the headquarters of the European Union. NATO and EUROCONTROL also have their headquarters in Brussels. **Border countries**: Belgium borders the Netherlands to the north, Germany and Luxembourg to the east and France to the south. **Area and population**: Belgium has an area of about 30,500 square kilometres, on which a little more than 11 million people live. **Form of government**: Kingdom with parliamentary democracy **Head of state**: King Filip of Belgium (Since 2013, as of September 2018) **Official languages**: Dutch, French, German **Currency**: € Euro **National Anthem**: "La Brabanconne" **Culture and characteristics**: Belgium is well known for the surrealist artist René Magritte, who was born there. Belgian comics are also known and loved all over the world, such as "Lucky Lukie", "The Smurfs" and "Tintin and Tintin". Very typical for Belgium are also the French fries, which were allegedly invented there. The country also has a very present chocolate culture. **Elevations**: Belgium does not belong to those states with high mountains and elevations. The highest mountains are only about seven hundred meters high. The White Stone, Botrange and Baraque Michel are to be mentioned here. In addition, a part of the Ardennes, a forest mountain range, is located in southern Belgium. **Waters**: Belgium borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north. There are also various rivers, such as the Meuse, which stretches almost nine hundred kilometres across Belgium, the Netherlands and France. The Scheldt also flows through the Belgian state with a length of about two hundred kilometres. **Flora and fauna (of the entire Benelux states)**: Many animals and plants native to Germany can also be found in Belgium and the entire Benelux states; after all, these are not far from Germany and similar living conditions prevail there. Large areas of the Benelux countries are forested; spruces, beeches, birches and other tree species grow here. The most common animals in Belgium include foxes, squirrels, martens, hedgehogs, roe deer, wild boars, etc. The most common are the foxes, the squirrels, the martens and the wild boars. **Places of interest**: The Belgian port of Antwerp is home to one of the largest seaports in the world. The population is around 17 million. **Form of government**: Monarchy with parliamentary democracy **Head of state**: King Willem-Alexander (Since 2013, as of September 2018) **Seat of government**: The Hague **Official languages**: Dutch, West Frisian, Papiamentu, English **Currency**: € Euro **National Anthem**: "Het Wilhelmus" **Culture**: The most famous Dutch representative of culture and art is the painter Vincent Van Gogh. Hieronymus Bosch as well as Rembrandt and Vermeer also lived in the Netherlands.  ###(Grand Duchy) Luxembourg **Capital**: The capital Luxembourg, which bears the same name as the entire state, is an important financial centre as well as the seat of the European Union. **Border countries**: Luxembourg borders Belgium to the northwest, France to the south and Germany to the east. 
 **Area and number of inhabitants**: The area is about two and a half million square kilometres; there are about 600,000 inhabitants in Luxembourg. **Form of government**: Grand Duchy with parliamentary democracy **Head of state**: Grand Duke Henri (Since 2000, as of 2018) **Official languages**: Luxembourgish, French, German **Currency**: Euro **National Anthem**: Ons Heemecht 
 **Culture**: Luxembourg has a wide variety of customs, traditions and holidays. Carnival and "Burgbrennen", for example, are celebrated there at great expense. Furthermore, the country has a lot to offer in various areas such as music, literature and cuisine. **Surveys**: Luxembourg is also not known for high surveys. The highest mountain is called Buurplatz and has a height of 560 metres. **Waters**: Luxembourg is a landlocked country. Important rivers include the Moselle and Our.
